Following his release of the Illmatic XX album re-issue on Tuesday, legendary hip-hop artist Nas premiered his documentary Time Is Illmatic at the Beacon Theater in New York City last night. Written by Eric Parker and directed by One9, the full length film was debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival where Robert De Niro was not only in attendance, but actually presented the movie to the audience.
The film takes a look into the creation of Nas‘ classic debut Illmatic, the conditions that influenced the music, and goes in length to talk about his father Olu Dara, a largely celebrated Jazz musician from Mississippi. After the film was finished, the rapper took the stage in true fashion with a bottle of Hennessy in hand and performed classic Illamatic hits such as “NY State Of Mind“, “Halftime,” and “The World Is Yours.” Between tracks Nas reminisced and brought out a variety of guests including Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor and more.
